#Twintterview: Sugarscratch Theatre

Untitled design.png

Alice Ritchie and Lily London are the founders and co-artistic directors of Sugarscratch Theatre. Following a sell-out run in Bristol’s Wardrobe Theatre, Alice and Lily are bringing their bittersweet two-hander ‘Said and Done’ to Edinburgh. We sat down with the self-starting duo to get their take on life, the universe, and (of course) their play.

FB: What’s the best thing you’ve ever said?

Alice: I have an idea for a show.

Lily: Let’s do it.

FB: What's the worst thing you've ever done?

A&L: Well, nobody is ever perfectly behaved, are they? I mean, you know, there are times when... I have to confess, when me and my friends, sort of, used to run through the fields of wheat. The farmers weren’t too pleased about that.

FB: Who are three guests you will definitely see at any wedding?

A&L: Nervous best man, drunk bridesmaid and annoying flower girl.

FB: What are the highs and lows of devising a fringe show with your bestie?

A&L: Well, for starters you know you already have the same sense of humour which is great. When drawing on real life experiences, you probably already know the story (or at least the people involved), and it’s flipping great to be bouncing ideas around with someone you are really comfortable with. However, it can be easy to get distracted with laughing and gossiping!

FB: Prosecco is the only cure for....

A&L: Well, hangover, heartbreak, indigestion, stubbed toe, boring people. Need we go on?

FB: What is something you wish you'd known before starting a theatre company?

A&L: How much fun and fulfilment we would get from it. We’d have formed Sugarscratch earlier if we’d have known. And how cool it sounds when you tell people you run your own theatre company! But also, how much admin is involved, which creative minds can struggle with.

FB: Five minutes before curtain, I’m…A&L: We always have to have pre-show-pees a plenty! Nothing worse than getting on stage and needing a pee. Especially when we drink as much fake prosecco on stage as we do! (Don’t worry, we move onto the real stuff after the show).

You can see Alice and Lily in Said and Done at Sweet Novotel, August 2-12, 14-18, 20-25.
