Othello

In Riverside Studios' #Othello, audacity takes centre stage. More than a mere #Shakespearean retelling, this production sets the scene for a rollercoaster of reinterpretation. The pièce de résistance? Iago, Shakespeare's master manipulator, fractured into three actors. In theory, a brilliant twist. In execution, a tad confounding🌓

Let's backtrack. Othello—a whirlwind of human emotion—demands messy authenticity. This adaptation, while drenched in ambition, felt... sanitised. Our tri-part Iago—intended as a deep dive into the psyche— muddies the waters. Instead of manipulating the cast, it seems Iago is too busy deciphering his trio of selves…

Despite the mismatches, Shakespeare's genius shines through the cracks🌱 The dissonance between this production and the Bard's original intent magnifies the power of his words📖 But it also underscores the gaps…

Character dynamics, the heart of Othello, feel anaemic here. Othello's chilling, I’m-Gonna-Kill-You tête-à-tête with Desdemona? It lacks the spine-tingling gravitas. Iago's interaction with his headstrong wife, Emilia, is underwhelming. And the unasked-for additions—a marriage scene & unmotivated voiceovers—feel more like dramatic detours than meaningful additions…

What about the black humour underlying much of Iago’s machinations? Stripped away, it seems. Tinkering with Shakespeare's words—chopping some & superimposing others—sometimes borders on patronising…

Veteran Othello enthusiasts might long for the visceral intensity of Lenny Henry's rendition at #TrafalgarStudios or the sly, intricate Iago of Rory Kinnear alongside Adrian Lester's Othello at the #NationalTheatre. Compared to these iconic portrayals, the camaraderie & charged dynamics here were, regrettably, MIA…

Yet, credit where credit's due: the contemporary, abstract set was a visual treat, even if certain stylistic choices—like Desdemona's death tableau—lacked bite. Bright spots include fleeting moments of authenticity from Cassio & Emilia, though these are tantalisingly sparse…

In a nutshell, Riverside Studios' Othello is audacious but askew. Kudos for the brave venture, but alas, the execution is more fumble than finesse🌟 2/5
