The Silence and the Noise

Daize, the daughter of a woman battling drug #addiction, refuses to enter her home when her mum’s partner/dealer sets up camp there🏡 Enter Ben, a young drug runner allured by this same man’s charisma & promises of fortune. In a debris-filled field near Daize’s house, their worlds collide. So begins a volatile friendship💥; we watch these two lonely teens engage in an emotional tug-of-war as turbulent as their lives...

🌟The good: "The Silence and The Noise", @a.tom.powell's 60-minute online play, sits comfortably in the realm between #theatre & #film. Clean, well-composed frames evoke the intimacy a live audience would feel in a fringe venue🎭, while the leafy outdoor location is visually delicious🎥 — excuse us while we imagine how & what eyeballs would eat…

🦚The alluring: Co-directors Rachel Lambert & Elle While, with director of photography Luke Collins, strip the storytelling down to the essentials, allowing the script to truly shine. Tom Powell's lush writing is filled with evocative lines that manage to combine whimsy & pathos; it’s a unique voice that we luurve😍…

🫧The hiccups: Rachelle Deidericks & William Robinson’s undeniable chemistry paints an endearing picture of young friendship. Their performances take on a heightened naturalism, more fluid & eloquent than everyday life. Though compelling, the plot’s arbitrary time jumps don’t quite hit the mark in the build-up to some of the most tragic moments. Still, the duo’s unassuming & honest portrayals of two desperate yet compassionate kids are heartwarming, compensating for any shortcomings⚖️...

In all, “The Silence and the Noise” highlights the power of connection in the face of isolation & neglect. Tragic yet surprisingly uplifting, it’s a raw depiction of #friendship & #love that moved our little hearts❤️ 3/5⭐
