Taiwanese company @tjimur_dance_theatre captured our hearts with their infectiously fun show “Ai~sa sa” which featured at #Edfringe2021 as part of @summerhallery’s Taiwan Season. The piece seamlessly blends dance, light acrobatics, music, mime and social commentary— and we are borderline #obsessed.😻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱: Where to start? Maybe with the irreverent tone. “Ai~sa sa” refers to a contemporary #Paiwan (indigenous Taiwanese) expression used to laugh at one’s foibles, a way of saying “get over yourself”. This lighthearted feeling infuses the piece, from the brightly coloured costumes to the exuberant choreography by @baru_madiljin. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁: The technical prowess of performers @mengtzuen, @ljaucutapurakac, @520themeiyang and @chiang__0902 is a delight to watch. As an ensemble, they are effortlessly coordinated. Individually, their characters’ flamboyant personalities provide almost non-stop humour, while raising questions about gender dynamics and identity through their interactions. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗱: It’s humour that ties the show together. Structured in a series of short vignettes, the performance takes place in various settings: onstage, on-location, indoor and outdoor, with cheeky video edits and upbeat music moving us from one place to the next. The scenes feel like non-verbal comedy sketches told through dance, with the characters constantly clashing, competing or pursuing one another. The result is high-octane and utterly jubilant 🎉🎉
