But the festive joy soon takes a spooky turn… 🏡The Relatable: Robertson & co-writer @jacoblarrick skilfully immerse us in the isolated village of Midwyntar, treating us to a kooky collection of characters: Rowan’s dad, Stephen (it’s pronounced Steef-in!) likes to tinker. A ‘lad’s lad’, but something’s just a bit off there. Her mum is a classic countryside charmer: a kind, earnest, friendly soul. Both are so hospitable you almost forget that Nana’s ashes are sitting on the TV stand. Cousin Adrian, the American social media addict, adds an intriguing ‘creepy annoying brother’ vibe with his intrusive eagerness. These well-crafted characters intrigue, delight & set up a relatably awkward #HomeSweetHome vibe… 🎄The Remarkable: The spot-on set design instantly immerses us in the story. The Old Red Lion is festively transformed with twinkling fairy lights, a small yet copiously decorated tree & a table overflowing with Xmas treats. It’s impossible not to catch a bit of that holiday cheer in such a visually appealing setting…🔍The Predictable: The Xmas joy diffuses soon after Po’s arrival & paves the way for a potentially sinister motive. Once we catch up with the real situation Po faces (#nospoilers), things spiral into the eerie. While the horror gradually builds, the ‘jump scares’ are more anticipated than surprising. We can’t help but wonder: is it a bit too easy to figure out what happens next? Overall, "Midwyntar" scores points for its charming & offbeat characters, rhythmic dialogue & creative set design. However, the psychological horror plot suffers from predictability. Common tropes like the overly friendly family, the too-recently deceased relative, & the remote cabin in the woods sometimes feel too generic for these unique characters. A more adventurous script could see this show truly soar.
