The premise of Shitty Mozart sums up its chaotic brilliance: the US government, in an effort to generate ‘Murica 🇺🇸#propaganda through song, has attempted to clone #Mozart (just go with it) and the experiment has (of course) gone wildly wrong. Imagine the title credits to The Powerpuff Girls, add an 18th century musical genius plus some pubes, and voilà, Shitty Mozart is born… The abundantly absurd charm is evident from the start. Actor-maestro Aaron Nemo (aka @ShittyMozart) builds a teetering tower of heavy tech requirements and high levels of incompetence to ensure that anything that can go wrong definitely will. Fans of #ThePlayThatGoesWrong, this is your jam… And for those seeking something more highbrow 🧐, well, it arguably stumbles into mildly philosophical metatheatre territory: At a preview performance @bk_arthaus, a disconnected sound system meant that the show couldn’t start. Or had it already begun? What even is theatre? Are WE the #theatre? Rest assured Nemo, in the cheapest period garb #ebay can provide, answers exactly zero questions. However, in-between the 🤌 buffoonery, we are treated to an entertaining account of his upbringing in #Ohio, punctuated by original musical masterpieces. Highlights include “My Cat Swallowed a Quarter” and “Holocaust Movie Mood”, performed alongside his trusty strobe-light stage partner, Mr. Brightside… Need we say this is not your typical #comedy? Nemo showcases a dizzying array of invented instruments and animations, including duets with cartoons and WAY more rat/pigeon orgies on the #NY subway than expected. #IFYKYK. Each tech fail and mistimed punchline only adds to the fun, making you question what’s a genuine error & what’s part of the act… Perfectly suited for its 11 pm timeslot, Shitty Mozart is a must-see for lovers of absurd comedy and technical #clowning.
